Maths Rally Mastery Learning Approach

Maths Rally School adopts an instructional approach called ‘Mastery Learning’. Following initial instruction on a unit of study, a brief assessment in form of short, informal quizzes, will be administered to the students.   This formative assessment is used as part of the learning process and is designed to give students information and feedback on their learning.  It helps to identify for students what they already have learned and areas that they have learning difficulties.

From a fairly broad repertoire of tactics, strategies and alternative approaches, the teachers would plan corrective activities which offer students explicit guidance and direction on how they can correct their learning errors and remedy their learning problems. When students have completed their corrective activities, a second parallel but not identical quiz will be administered to verify if the correctives are successful in helping students overcome their individual learning difficulties.  This offers students a second chance at success and is a powerful motivational tool to show students that they can improve their learning.

As for students who have attained mastery from the initial teaching, challenging enrichment or extension activities would be provided to broaden or expand their learning. The strength of the ‘Mastery Learning Approach’ and the formative assessment is that it prevents students’ minor learning difficulties from accumulating and becoming major learning problems.  It enables teachers to vary and differentiate their instruction in order to better meet students’ individual learning needs.
